Working with the MDNR and Ludington Charter Boat Assoc, the GLSI had a critical role in getting Coho planted on April 3rd in the Big Sauble River. This is the first time that Coho have been planted in Ludington and if this proves effective will encourage the MDNR to move more fish around to different ports of Michigan to increase fishing opportunities and save our incredible salmon fishery and the economic benefit to the state. A big thank you to all the people that showed up and participated in lending a hand, A big hand goes out to Shawn Pimorski for taking over the net pen project for Ludington. Shown here in these pics is the hatchery truck preparing the tubes for delivering the fish to the pens, then the fish being gravity fed into the pens. the next pic is Shawn tying down the lids preparing to put the feeders on top to feed the coho. As soon as these fish show signs of wanting to migrate to Lake Michigan another 40,000 fish will be brought from the hatchery and released with the 10,000 coho from the net pens. These fish are expected to return as adults next summer providing an additional fishery to Ludington. An added benefit maybe some of these fish will remain in the area providing a spring fishery along this shoreline. Yesterday in Ludington on the Big Sauble river received 10,000 Coho. Pictured here is the pipe leading from the hatchery truck to the net pens. Very exciting. When these are ready to swim out to the big Lake 40,000 more will be brought from the hatchery and they will be released together.
